Faculty Physician - Primary Care Internal Medicine (Assistant Professor - Academic Track)
The Department of Medicine is seeking an outpatient academic general internist to serve as a clinician educator in the Division of Geriatrics, Palliative and Primary Care at the University of Minnesota. This faculty appointment will work in the Primary Care Clinic at the M Health Fairview Clinics and Surgery Center in Minneapolis on the East Bank of the campus.
Position Highlights:
Clinical Duties:
The University of Minnesota Primary Care Clinic serves and treats many unique patient populations:
1. Complex primary care: patients who have one or more chronic diseases managed by other subspecialists at the University.
2. University community: professors, administrators, and staff who work at the University.
3. Local community: people who live in the nearby surrounding neighborhoods, including Seward, Highland Park, and Prospect Park in Minneapolis.
The Primary Care Clinic is located within the Clinics and Surgery Center (CSC), a modern facility which opened in 2016 and houses the outpatient practice of M Health Fairview physicians at the University, with access to advanced imaging services seven days a week. There is outpatient IV therapy through the Specialty Infusion and Procedure Center.
Our faculty physicians have clinics scheduled Monday-Friday in 4 hour blocks: 7 am-11am; 11am-3pm; and 3pm-7am. We staff a Saturday morning clinic, no more than 6 per academic year. We have flexibility in creating a clinic schedule to suit a variety of needs. One of the weekly 4-hour blocks will consist of virtual care via video visits, which can be done from a home or from an office on campus, with flexible start and stop times. Evening/weekend call duties are minimal and fully supported by Fairview Nurse Advisors triage.
Academic Duties:
Faculty will have numerous teaching opportunities, including precepting Internal Medicine residents in continuity clinic and hosting medical students on the Essentials of Clinical Medicine rotation. Faculty can engage in preclinical medical school teaching as course director, small group facilitator, or lecturer. Our faculty regularly present topics to the Internal Medicine residents through our Lunch and Learn series and participate in the Internal Medicine Education Days (IMED). Opportunities are available for GME-level interprofessional teaching and collaboration across the Academic Health Center.
Academic faculty receive protected time (.15 FTE) to facilitate teaching and curriculum development research projects, presentations at academic meetings, peer reviewed publications and other academic pursuits. Most teaching roles within the medical school also come with FTE support to allow adequate time to devote to educational efforts. Candidates should have a commitment to clinical excellence, education, and quality improvement. The division has a strong mentoring program for all faculty to support them in their career development and pathway to promotion.
